Another softball

Right up there with reusable bags...you guessed it...reusable containers!

This is another no-brainer (and is easier than you think!). Polystyrene (styrofoam) is one of the more wicked types of plastic - it is not readily recyclable, so mostly ends up in landfill, and is extremely light, so it is not easily contained in waste management infrastructure - meaning a good amount likely ends up in the environment. I typically keep a reusable glass container with me at work that I throw in my bag when I go out to lunch or dinner, in case I have leftovers that I want to bring back with me. I've since discovered a lot of other (and lighter!) alternatives:

  • Clean Planet Ware has stainless steal stackable containers that are great

  • Restaurant Wholesalers often carry compostable, collapsible paper containers that you can easily carry with you and pop out when you need

  • Ethical Foods put out this useful article with links to different disposable containers depending on what you're looking for

Many cities around the US are actually in the process of banning polystyrene or restaurant take-out containers entirely. The first phase of DC's "Foam Ban" went into effect in January 2016. Groundswell created this great map that shows which states have banned, or in the process of banning, polystyrene. If you're in one of the darker blue states, get ahead of the curve! If you're in a turquoise state, you should already be on the reusable container bandwagon - welcome :)
